Accessible Portable Toilets Start with an Accessible Approach
An accessible portable toilet is one part of an inclusive temporary restroom plan. The route leading to it, the surface beneath it, the space around it, and the absence of obstacles matter just as much. Use this page to identify the site conditions that should be discussed before placement.
Look beyond the unit
Start at the point where a guest or worker leaves the main activity. Is the route firm enough for the expected mobility device? Is it reasonably level, wide enough, and free of tent ropes, cords, parked vehicles, stacked supplies, standing water, and loose debris?
Preserve turning and waiting space
Do not squeeze an accessible unit into a narrow gap simply because the footprint appears to fit. Leave the surrounding area clear and avoid creating a queue across the approach.
Plan for the people actually attending
An event organizer may need to consider older adults, children, guests using wheelchairs or walkers, and anyone who cannot comfortably navigate grass or uneven gravel.
Confirm applicable requirements
Accessibility rules can depend on the event, property, jurisdiction, and other facilities available. The venue or responsible authority should confirm the requirements that apply to your site.
